CALM, Xpress Campaign

Over the last six months, I’ve had the pleasure of directing a full awareness campaign on behalf of CALM. The Campaign against Living Miserably is a charity set up to prevent male suicide, currently the biggest killer of men under 35. I was shocked by this statistic and saw the opportunity to help. My network, amassed through the array of projects I have found myself involved with in 2011/12, got behind the cause and we called in Xpress.

Xpress would be about the benefits of artistic expression, my idea being that guys who find it difficult to talk about sensitive issues, the arts can offer a smorgasboard of channels for aggression, shame, hurt and the other extremes of happiness, celebration and humour. For me personally, I have great purpose, goals, community and belonging afforded by my career path. this is quite simply, what gets me out of bed. I never had a firm direction for the campaign beyond that, but five months in, we prepare to release a compilation album through my music company, Quenched Music. This boasts The Strokes, The Libertines and Reverend and The Makers, to turn heads towards the amazing new artists.

We have the support of Steve Merchant, Jon McClure and many other leading men in the arts. pro-wrestling, I managed
to catch the company’s
eye with banners created
for feature film,
‘The Lost Generation.’

Taking things from a 2D environment and maintaining my style in a 3D film context was always going to be a challenge. Bringing in another artist in the form of Hannah Ward, we eventually arrived at a dark conclusion perfect for the penultimate scenes of Mark Ashmore’s Lost Generation movie, due to be shot in the Autumn of 2012.

The Lost Generation, feature film art direction

Teaming up with director and producer, Mark Ashmore of http://futureartists.co.uk I took on the role of Art Director for his debut feature film, The Lost Generation. The project transcends film alone, using technology and a wide range of media to engage a mass audience in social, cultural and political issues relevant to us all. Working in set design, costume design, photography, poster/logo design and even landing an extra role as part of the Unknown, a vigilante group in the movie.

With launch time due for my Manchester based music project, Quenched Music, we collaborated with photographer Sharah Smith to represent us and our goals in the music industry. With a combined art direction effort between Sharah and I, we dragged the OHP into Salford’s Black Lion pub. Here Future Artists owners Mark Ashmore and Jenny Inchbald are striving to make the venue a creative hub and were kind enough to lend us the use of the basement. Casting my drawings and Quenched co-owner Danni Skerritt‘s words onto the decaying walls and our bodies, here are the fantastic results.
